There are many reasons for investing in private tuition. I have put together the top 5 benefits of hiring a tutor for your child.

1. Prevent Summer Learning Loss

During the summer holidays, tutors can aid children in utilising and practising the skills they have learnt throughout the school year. Summer learning loss is when a child returns to school in September at a lower academic level than when they finished the previous school year in July. Research has suggested that students lose 25-30% of school year learning over the summer. Hiring a tutor is an excellent way to mitigate this loss and set children up for even greater success in their upcoming academic year, especially those essential examination years.

2. Private Tutoring is Customised

All children learn differently. It is extremely difficult for a classroom teacher to deliver sessions in a way that suits each member of their class. As a private tutor, I am able to focus on one child and adapt my teaching to the child’s specific learning style and pace. I start my sessions by understanding where the tutee is currently at in their learning, and make a bespoke plan to build from there. This one on one engagement allows for open discussions and greater opportunity for children to share their ideas and viewpoints in a safe space.

3. Better Performance at School

Private tuition empowers children to perform better at school. Tutors are able to go beyond the curriculum to ensure that children develop a deeper understanding of the given topic matter and form links across the topic. Unlike schools, tutors are not confined by particular methods or schemes, so are able to innovate activities that best support your child in reaching their desired outcomes. Tutors are best placed to identify any gaps in understanding and tailor tuition sessions to bridge these gaps. Alongside catch-up support, tutors are able to create work to challenge even the brightest of pupils who are aiming for top secondary schools.

4. Increase Your Child’s Confidence and Self Esteem

Tutors are equipped to cultivate potential within any child through individualised, attentive support. Many children, regardless of attainment level, struggle with contributing in class and asking for help when it is needed - tutors can assist with this. Tutors not only support your children in achieving academic results, but also help build self confidence that is then reflected in school and beyond. A tutor creates a safe space for your child to further develop into a confident, capable individual.

5. A Tutor as a Mentor

A tutor is not your child’s teacher or parent; they assume a role closer to that of a mentor. Tutors do not set strict rules or regulations, but do build a strong, supportive relationship with their students where learning progresses at a faster pace.

So, what do I offer?

I am a private tutor who has recently left full time teaching in a leading London prep school. I specialise in maths preparation for the 11+, 7+ and 13+ exams and view the summer holidays as essential preparation time for success in these exams.

Having experienced many settings in the state and private sectors, I am best equipped to understand what and how your child is learning in school. This knowledge allows me to build effective tuition sessions according to your child’s understanding. Every session I teach is bespoke.

Alongside exam-specific tuition, I believe the summer is an excellent time to review age group maths and prepare children for their next academic year. Confidence is so important in primary school maths and I ensure to keep this is at the centre of all my sessions.

This summer I am offering:

  • 6 week tuition blocks

  • Intensive maths weeks

  • Annual maths reviews

  • Secondary school maths transition sessions.
