When it comes to preparing for the 11+, the choices can feel endless. Group classes, online programs, individual tutors—the options are enough to make your head spin. If you’ve decided on individual tuition, one big question remains: do you go with a subject specialist or an 11+ generalist?

While both have their merits, I believe a subject specialist can give your child the edge they need to excel in this highly competitive process. Here’s why.

  1. Beyond the Curriculum

Let’s be honest, the 11+ isn’t just any test. For some schools, acceptance rates are even lower than Oxbridge admissions. To stand out, children need more than just basic skills; they need to go beyond the 11+ standard. That’s where a subject specialist comes in.

With a deep understanding of their field, specialists don’t just teach: they inspire. They push students to stretch their abilities, tackle trickier problems, and feel confident when faced with the toughest challenges.

  2. Thorough Review and Tailored Support

By focusing on just one subject, specialists bring a depth of knowledge and expertise that goes far beyond the basics. Most subject specialists hold at least an undergraduate degree in their field and are confident teaching all the way to A level. When you hire a specialist, you’re not just hiring a tutor, you’re hiring an expert who truly understands their subject.

This focus allows specialists to thoroughly review your child’s progress, identify specific areas that need improvement, and create tailored lessons to address those gaps. With their deep understanding, they can provide the kind of targeted support that ensures your child not only meets 11+ expectations but excels.

Generalists have some knowledge across all subjects but often have to spread their attention thin. A specialist, on the other hand, dives into the details, ensuring no stone is left unturned.

  1. Engaging and Flexible Lessons

When a tutor is passionate and knowledgeable about their subject, it shows. Specialists can create lessons that are both rigorous and engaging, often tailoring activities to match your child’s interests. Specialists can quickly adapt during sessions, seeing their lesson plans as flexible to best meet what the individual child needs.

This isn’t about rushing to tick boxes or cram information. It’s about fostering a genuine understanding and making the process enjoyable. That enthusiasm is contagious. When a child sees their tutor deeply invested, they’re more likely to stay motivated.

  1. The Best Resources for the Job

The 11+ world is full of resources, but not all are created equal. A subject specialist has the experience to know what works and what doesn’t. They’ll sift through the noise to find the most effective materials for your child and even create their own resources, customised to meet the demands of the exam and your child’s target schools.

This level of precision ensures every minute of tuition is maximised.

  1. Parent Support and Insights

The 11+ isn’t just stressful for students—it can be daunting for parents, too. A subject specialist doesn’t just teach your child; they support you.

From regular updates on progress to advice on how to help at home, a specialist ensures that you’re in the loop and working as a team to help your child succeed.

Bonus: Building Confidence for Interviews

Schools include an interview as part of the 11+ process, where interpersonal skills and problem-solving abilities are put to the test. Working with multiple tutors gives children a chance to practice communicating with different adults, boosting their confidence for the real thing.

Why I Believe in Subject Specialists

There’s a reason why most top prep schools bring in subject specialists for Upper Key Stage 2. Years ago, I worked as an 11+ generalist, teaching English, maths, verbal reasoning, and non-verbal reasoning. Whilst qualified to teach all these subjects, I began to notice something important: by dividing my focus across so many areas, I wasn’t able to fully develop my expertise in any one of them. Over time, I realised I was becoming de-skilled in the areas I was most passionate about.

With my experience as a maths teacher in London and a Masters in Mathematics Education (see image from many years ago!), I decided to focus on what I truly enjoy—helping children excel in mathematics. This shift allowed me to refine my teaching methods and dive deeper into the subject,  creating lessons that not only prepare students for the 11+ but also provide them with a solid foundation for future academic success.

The Takeaway

Choosing a subject specialist for 11+ tuition is more than just an academic decision—it’s an investment in quality, focus, and results. It’s about giving your child the tools to thrive, not just in the exam, but beyond it.

If you want to give your child that competitive edge, a subject specialist might just be the secret weapon you’ve been looking for.
