Why I Believe in Subject Specialists

There’s a reason why most top prep schools bring in subject specialists for Upper Key Stage 2. Years ago, I worked as an 11+ generalist, teaching English, maths, verbal reasoning, and non-verbal reasoning. Whilst qualified to teach all these subjects, I began to notice something important: by dividing my focus across so many areas, I wasn’t able to fully develop my expertise in any one of them. Over time, I realised I was becoming de-skilled in the areas I was most passionate about.

With my experience as a maths teacher in London and a Masters in Mathematics Education (see image from many years ago!), I decided to focus on what I truly enjoy—helping children excel in mathematics.
